Next Atlanta Regional Housing Forum
Homelessness in Metro Atlanta - An Update

December 7, 2011

Our next Atlanta Regional Housing Forum will address the topic of homelessness. We have invited representatives of the Regional Commission on Homelessness to present on their current work and progress toward the ‘Blueprint to End Homelessness in Ten Years’.

About the Regional Commission on Homelessness: In 2002, at the request of Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, United Way convened what would become the Regional Commission on Homelessness. Leaders from the business, charitable and government sectors were brought together to develop a regional strategy for eliminating chronic homelessness in our community. In 2003, the ‘Blueprint to End Homelessness in Ten Years’ was adopted.

The joint efforts of the eight jurisdictions, The City of Atlanta and seven other jurisdictions, to end homelessness have included creating housing for homeless men, women and children, enhancing services and building a strong coalition. The region has made outstanding progress in ending chronic homelessness in metro Atlanta, but there is still much work to be done. Today, 20 percent of the homeless population is considered chronically homeless.

 Foreclosure Watch

August foreclosure filings were up from July totals in the 20 county metro region, with 11,394 filings. While at a five-month high for 2011, the August numbers were still 33% less than the same period in a year ago.
